Sedation

Sleep Dentistry

Many people avoid seeking treatment for dental problems despite persistent painful symptoms simply because they are too afraid or uncomfortable with dental visits. Norton Dental Vaughan provides sedation dentistry for patients who may suffer from dental phobias or dental anxiety. Sedation dentistry enables such patients to receive the dental care they require in a comfortable state. Neglecting necessary dental care may lead to more serious health concerns requiring more extensive treatment and may even result in tooth loss if not treated in time.

Oral sedation dentistry involves the use of sedation dentistry drugs such as triazolam, halcion, lorazepam or diazepam. Oral sedation dentistry allows our team of specialists to accomplish complex procedures in less time and fewer appointments.

Conscious sedation dentistry utilizes conscious sedation drugs such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or a sedative pill that is taken orally the night before the procedure and a few hours prior to the dental appointment. A sedation pill will allow a patient to arrive (accompanied by a driver) to their dental appointment in a calm, relaxed frame of mind. The patient will then remain anxiety-free for the duration of their treatment. IV sedation is also available for complex dental procedures and higher levels of dental anxiety.

Candidates for sedation dentistry include patients with:

  • Disabilities that interfere with dental care
  • Prior dental trauma
  • Dental anxiety
  • Fear of needles or dental instruments
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty controlling body movements
  • Sensitive teeth

Sedation dentistry side effects may include a brief unawareness of time. A dental procedure that may have taken hours to complete will often feel like minutes. In other cases, patients may have a clouded memory of their time in the dental chair. At Norton Dental Vaughan, our experienced sedation dentist understands that patients may react differently. Prior to your sedation dentistry appointment, you will be asked a series of questions about your overall health including any medications you may be taking to best ensure your health and safety.

Norton Dental Vaughan offers sedation dentistry for children with dental anxieties, past traumatic dental experiences, strong gag reflex, mentally compromised children, medically compromised children and children who fear the sounds and smells associated with dental care.
